SEO

In 2024, there were 7 official moments when the organic search results were shaken up, during and/or following a Google update. This is the lowest number of updates to have taken place in a single year over the past 4 years.
| Update | Start | End |
| March 2024 Core Update | 5 March | 19 April |
| March 2024 Spam Update | 5 March | 20 March |
| June 2024 Spam Update | 20 June | 27 June |
| August 2024 Spam Update | 15 August | 3 September |
| November 2024 Core Update | 11 November | 5 December |
| December 2024 Core Update | 12 December | 18 December |
| December 2024 Spam Update | 19 December | 26 December |
The variety of updates was also limited to Spam Updates and Core Updates alone, since Google announced in March 2024 that Helpful Content Updates would henceforth be included under Core Updates.
Spam Updates are intended to separate the wheat (valuable search results) from the chaff (spam) even more effectively. Google is somewhat less transparent about the approach and algorithm changes during a Core Update, but the aim is comparable: to provide users with the best possible results in search, according to Google's most up-to-date insights.
How do we see the impact of these updates reflected in the data? We compare 4 different sectors: electronics, finance, interiors and travel. For this purpose, in a Share of Voice analysis, we compare our keyword-level data for the top 20 search results per sector at 2 points in time, 1 January 2024 and 1 January 2025.
We measure how many of the selected relevant search terms, a mix of commercial and informational terms, are in the top 20 at both points in time (the indexation percentage), and what the average position of these indexed terms is (average position).
An increase in the indexation ratio is an improvement, and the same applies to an increase in average position. (We reversed it to better match the positive connotation associated with an increase.) Ideally, you therefore want to be in the top right of the graph; the websites that have declined in visibility for this set of search terms are shown in the bottom left.
So, what market shifts took place within the organic top 20 over the past year?
| Website | Average position | Indexation-% | |
| Biggest riser | Forza-refurbished.nl | +26,9% | +61% |
| Biggest faller | Apple.com | -55% | -11% |
| Noteworthy | BCC.nl | –3,4% | +484% |
The sum of 1 years of Google updates has resulted in little overall change for the electronics market. Most websites remained in the top 20 for almost the same number of search terms, and most changes in average position were small. Forza-refurbished.nl emerged as the clear winner.
A few exceptions. Apple.com, which was not exactly known for a reputable SEO strategy , has seen a sharp decline in its indexation percentage within the top 20. Particularly striking is that this even applies to keywords closely associated with Apple, such as ‘iphone 14’ or ‘airpods’. The cause? Apple.com appears to have made substantial cuts to its URL structure, with many relevant pages and their good positions disappearing.
BCC.nl remained approximately the same in terms of average position, but reached the top 20 for no fewer than 484% additional search terms over the past year. Remarkable, considering that the shop was declared bankrupt at the end of 2023 and the domain is now a comparison website, which, in our experience, Google does not generally think particularly highly of.
Also noteworthy: Marktplaats.nl. In 2022, we saw a strong downward trend in visibility for this marketplace; in 2023, it recovered, and the website is also on the rise again in the Share of Voice figures for 2024. Here too, in the electronics sector, with an improvement in average percentage and no fewer than 43% additional electronics-related search terms in the top 20.
| Website | Average position | Indexation-% | |
| Biggest riser | Hypotheekrente.nl | +24,7% | -2% |
| Biggest faller | Homefinance.nl | -26,6% | -15% |
The financial market, with related search terms such as ‘borrow money’, ‘compare mortgage rates’ and ‘what is investing’, is an interesting one. This online sector includes so-called YMYL websites (“Your Money or Your Life”), to which Google applies even stricter requirements because they can potentially have a major impact on users’ financial wellbeing and stability.
And that appears to be precisely what Homefinance.nl lacks: the resources (E-E-A-T ) that assure Google that the website and organisation can be trusted. The result is a noticeable decline in visibility within the organic top 20.
| Website | Average position | Indexation-% | |
| Biggest risers | Loods5.nl | +14,8% | +60% |
| Eijerkamp.nl | +15,5% | -5% | |
| Biggest faller | Shop.vtwonen.nl | -30,1% | -63% |
| Noteworthy | Blokker.nl | -19,9% | -27% |
There were quite a few shifts in the interiors sector over the past year. Here too, we see Marktplaats.nl climbing further into the top 20, while Amazon.nl is also regaining ground.
Comparison site Beslist.nl has been in a downward spiral for years, and in 2024, Shop.vtwonen.nl joined it. Loods5.nl and Eijerkamp.nl have grown by far the fastest in terms of visibility within the home and interiors sector.
| Website | Average position | Indexation-% | |
| Biggest risers | Transavia.com | +21,7% | +14% |
| Cheaptickets.nl | +21,9% | +2% | |
| Vakantiediscounter.nl | +19% | Unchanged | |
| Biggest faller | Goedkopevliegtickets.nl | -35,4% | -27% |
Are you booking a trip in 2025, or are you still exploring your options? You are more likely to do so online via Transavia.com, Vakantiediscounter.nl or Cheaptickets.nl than via Goedkopevliegtickets.nl. For our mix of commercial and informational search terms, the former websites have appeared in the organic top 20 considerably more often than the latter since 2024.
Another noteworthy development was Reisjunk.nl. For the 678 travel-related keywords in our database for which the blog ranks, its average position declined, but at the same time the site gained almost twice as many terms in the top 20.
To identify trends in the shift data, we compare all fallers with one another and all risers with one another across various areas. For example, do we see similarities in domain authority (DR)? Differences in the type of website? Type of provider? The content’s scope and quality? Do any technical shortcomings stand out? And so on.
Our findings at a glance:
Shop.vtwonen.nl and Eijerkamp.nl, at first glance 2 comparable homeware webshops, active in the same industry. Nevertheless, the former performed poorly in 2024, while the latter website was among the biggest climbers within the organic top 20.
The visibility score, calculated based on position in combination with search volume, only increased for Eijerkamp.nl over the course of 2024. Based on our interior industry keyword tracking, Shop.vtwonen.nl was already considerably less visible than its competitor, but suffered an additional blow in May.
What is going on here? What do we see when we compare the homeware webshops?
| Shop.vtwonen.nl | Eijerkamp.nl | |
| Product range | Furniture, home accessories and other interior items from various brands | Furniture, home accessories and other interior items from various brands |
| Branded monthly search volume | ± 2.500 (‘vtwonen shop’ and variants; the magazine has its own website) | ± 50.000 |
| DR | 75 | 52 |
| URL structure | Maximaal 2 lagen diep (homepage > collections/pages/products > categorie)
Non-hierarchical (/armchairs, for example, do not fall under /chairs) No subcategories for styles, colours, etc. |
Tot 4 lagen diep (homepage > woonkamer > kasten > tv-meubels > industrieel)
Hierarchical (/armchairs fall under /living-room) Subcategories for popular styles and colours, etc. |
| (Helpful) content | Kleine hoeveelheid content per categoriepagina, maximaal 1 alinea
Extensive product pages with relevant tables and lots of text, somewhat unclear in terms of structure No blog or inspiration pages |
Uitgebreide content per categoriepagina, niveau ‘klassieke SEO-tekst’
Concise but informative product pages with additional product imagery, information clearly presented in tables Extensive home and interiors blog and inspiration pages |
| E-E-A-T | Reference to offline authority (‘seen on TV’) immediately visible | Trustpilot score, physical shops, interior advice and customer service displayed directly and prominently, references to offline authority (‘seen on TV’), extensive About us section with atmospheric imagery, pages for each homeware shop including atmospheric imagery |
Shop.vtwonen.nl stands out with high domain authority (DR), but Eijerkamp.nl is the clear winner in virtually every other respect. Not only is the website structure better suited to being found for more than just the most generic short-tail keywords, but the website is also better optimised for SEO at both page and domain level.
In particular, the major difference in helpful content and E-E-A-T signals stands out. Eijerkamp excels at inspiring visitors and clearly takes on an advisory role as the expert. The presence of physical locations, which are entirely absent from VTwonen, incidentally, is also prominently reflected on the website. And does the visitor want to find out more about the company’s history, mission or sustainability goals? No problem.
By comparison, Shop.vtwonen.nl comes across as rather sparse in the test. The webshop relies heavily on its TV exposure, but otherwise has little to offer in terms of expertise, authority and trust signals. It lacks even a review link and a concise About us page, and visitors have to scroll all the way down to the footer for a little personal customer service.
The real winner of 2024? In the Netherlands, that was undoubtedly Wikipedia.org. We deliberately excluded the well-known knowledge base from our Share of Voice analyses by industry, for 1 simple reason: Wikipedia was growing too fast. With improvements in indexation rates of more than 25.000%, the rest of the data rather fades into insignificance.
This development fits neatly with our observations around helpful content and E-E-A-T. Although the online encyclopaedia still has a reputation for being an unreliable source of material, the opposite is true. Anyone can add and edit the articles, but strict quality checks are carried out by specialist moderators.
Moreover, many Wikipedia articles contain a long list of (scientific or otherwise) sources in their references, while the nature of the website creates naturally built-up, exceptionally strong domain authority.
Helpful? We are generally quite content ;). E-E-A-T-proof? Check.
Long story short: at website level, we draw the same conclusions that we previously outlined at a high level. Strong authority is great, but if it is limited to the backlink strategy alone, it is no longer enough.
Show your users that you are the expert, that you have first-hand experience with your product or service, and seize every opportunity to demonstrate your trustworthiness. Success with helpful content and E-E-A-T = success in search. In 2024, and, if we have to look into our crystal ball: also in 2025.
