As you know, Google regularly displays AI Overviews (AIO) for search queries. This means that traditional website references appear lower down the page and are therefore less visible.

With a Google AI Overview report, you gain clear insight into the impact on your website and discover how to become visible in these new AI blocks. This allows you to remain present as a brand where your target audience is searching.

The interactive analysis on this page shows:

  • How often AIO appears
  • What the potential reach is
  • Which brands are mentioned

Of course, this analysis can also be carried out for your market, and you will additionally receive practical information that allows you to take immediate action to improve visibility in AIO.

How often does Google display an AI Overview?

Based on a group of focus terms, an analysis can be made of the extent to which an AI Overview is present. This can vary considerably by industry and keyword selection. The advice is to start with the search terms that generate the most traffic and revenue.

If AIO is frequently present, this can have a direct impact on your organic traffic and visibility. It is therefore important to include this in your KPIs, alongside the traditional SEO measurements.

With AIO coverage of almost 50%, there is a strong chance that pages that traditionally rank well will generate less organic traffic. This affects both click-through behaviour and brand visibility. If the measurements show that AIO is strongly present in your market, include AIO visibility as an additional KPI alongside the classic SEO metrics.

What is the potential impact on traffic?

Not all search queries are the same. That is why the total search volume of terms with AIO versus without AIO has been compared. This gives you a quick initial view of the ratio and the potential impact.

The average monthly search volume of search queries with AIO is around 300.000 and is almost equal to the volume of search queries that (as yet) do not display AIO.

As the share of search volume with AIO increases, the likelihood that the total number of clicks on organic results will fall also increases. This is because users find their answer in the AI Overview more quickly and click through to websites less often.

Which search queries do or do not have AIO?

The third graph shows the 20 most important search queries based on search volume and indicates where AIO is or is not present. This gives you immediate insight into the situation for your most impactful search terms and supports the setting of content priorities.

An AIO is also present for generic, informational search queries with a high search volume. This shows that AIO does not only appear for search queries containing question words such as how or when, but also for short, single-word search terms.

Being visible in the Google AI Overview

If you want to include AIO as a KPI, measurement is essential. Just as in the traditional search results, Google places references to websites (citations) in the AI Overview.

By analysing which websites are mentioned and how often, you gain insight into visibility. This is an important first step towards AIO optimisation.

In this example, Organgefit.nl receives an additional highlight within the field that has been mapped. In your AIO market analysis, your domain will be highlighted in the same way.

The aim is to position the green dot as far towards the top right as possible: this means that a domain appears frequently in AIO (high presence percentage) and is visible (low average position).

What does the traditional organic field look like?

To put the AIO landscape into proper perspective, the traditional SEO landscape has also been analysed. For a fair comparison, only the search queries for which an AI Overview actually appears have been included. This makes it clear how traditional organic findability compares with visibility within Google’s AI Overviews.

Which websites are referred to in AIO and how often?

The graph shows the number of AIO references (citations) per website and the number of unique search queries with at least one citation.
The ratio between the two shows how dominant a website is within AIO based on all search queries.

The conclusion of this analysis is that there are 3 websites that are regularly included in AIO. On average, they have ~2 references per search term in AIO.

From insight to action: how do you make this measurable and actionable?

Insight is the first step towards successful Google AI Overview optimisation. It is not only about knowing that AIO appears, but above all how it is structured and which themes play a role in it.

In addition to the visual report, you receive a clear view of the composition of the AI Overview for each search query. You can see which subjects and perspectives are covered, for which search queries you are or are not visible, and you therefore gain a complete overview of the field in which your website operates.

Example AIO table (search queries & visibility)

Search query Average monthly search volume AIO present AIO URL Same URL as organic ranking?
protein shake 3600 ❌ - -
high-protein snacks 2400 ✅ orangefit.nl/fitblog/voeding/eiwitrijke-snacks ✅

Example of an AIO text for the search query: 'plant-based proteins'

Why are plant-based proteins important?

  • Essential building blocks

Proteins are essential for the development and repair of muscles, tissues and cells in our bodies.

  • Variety of amino acids

Plant-based protein sources provide various amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. By eating a varied diet, you get all the essential amino acids.

  • Health benefits

Studies show that a diet rich in plant-based proteins can contribute to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems.

Tips for optimal protein intake

  • Combine different sources

By eating different plant-based protein sources, you get all the essential amino acids.

  • Pay attention to preparation

Some preparation methods can improve the digestibility of plant-based proteins.

  • Consume enough calories

Make sure you consume enough calories to meet your protein requirements.

Plant-based proteins vs. animal proteins

  • Protein quality

It is generally assumed that animal proteins have a slightly higher protein quality because they contain all the essential amino acids in a better ratio.

  • Protein absorption

Plant-based proteins may be absorbed slightly less easily than animal proteins, but this can be compensated for by eating more plant-based proteins.

  • Health benefits

Plant-based protein sources are often rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals and contain less saturated fat and cholesterol than animal proteins.

By linking these insights to your existing content, you discover where opportunities lie to be more relevant and prominent. This makes it clear which subjects need to be strengthened, where additions are needed and how you can align your content strategy with what Google’s AI actually displays.

The result: practical tools for working purposefully towards better visibility in the AI Overviews, ensuring that your brand remains top of mind in this new search landscape.
